Mike - Audience Feedback

In order to analyse our work we decided that we must get the views of others, rather than just us two. Above is a video of Mike Frost's views on our piece. It is important that we do this in order to figure out what will work in our future products.

Final Editing On Magazine Cover

After editing I was then prompted to edit in the lists of current articles in our magazine and the main components of a magazine.  After various editing and the insertion of things such as a production image of the make-up being done on our character, this is our final product;

Final Poster

Above is our final poster with all the finishing touches all complete. When compared to a proffesional film poster we can see that all the components which should be included are on our piece. Also the colour schemes used work well enough to fit in the proffesional industry.

Other Editing On Poster 2

After finally deciding on the specified image for our poster I decided that I would add my finished poster credits onto our piece. By adding the components one by one it gives me a chance to witness the development of our poster. By editing it on photoshop it allows me to manouver where I feel it would fit the best.  For example with both images 1 and two I have edited where I placed the cinema release date.

Although both of these layouts work very well I feel that the first one works more succsessfully as it allows me space in order to insert the title and other important features of a poster.

Above is the image of our work on our poster after final edits, although the image is succsessful and it includes all the components I felt as though there was something missing. This then prompted me to use the fade to black tool on the edges of our peice in order to insert a more dark feel into our image and create the eerie atmosphere.

Editing The Footage.

Over the past few days we have frequently been organizing the layout of our clips on our timeline in Adobe Premier Pro. We have inserting new footage that was shot in the Studio in Winstanley College as in here we could used lighting elements in order to create our eerie atmosphere with the modern lighting equiment supplied. To our clips we decided to add some transitions on such as fading to black or a cross dissolve. By doing this it allowed a more free flowing footage. To do all of this we had to use Premiere Pro.

In order to complete our trailer we needed to finish of  touching up our sound material and add the sound and preview screens/credits.

Magazine Front Cover Process

As we had all of our images from our filming day I decided that it would be good if I could make a start to our magazine front cover.

First I selected the image which I thought would be successful for our magazine.

However then although the image was a perfect shot for our front cover I did not feel that the background was sufficient enough to be a magazine cover. This is why I chose to carefully cut out the girl and erase the background.

At first I decided that I would experiment with a black background for my magazine, however, I discovered that it was too plain. Although having a black background would make  my image stand out more I decided to go for a blending blue and black background by using the gradient tool.  Below is how my background turned out to look like.

- As you can see here I started to add things such as Bar codes and my magazine name. At first 'FGN' was only a mock up name for my magazine but I decided that it worked well as it was short and catchy such as many programs and magazines in society now like 'NME' and MTV'. FGN stands for Film Generation now.

My Finished Poster Credits

Upon examining existing poster credits this is what lead me to create my own base credits which I could then include on my poster and if I wanted to change my idea I could simply copy them across.

Analysis of Movie Poster Company Credits

In many movie posters a set of movie credits are devised in order to acknowledge the producers and creators of films. In order to make sure that my movie poster looked professional I needed to make sure that I included a set of credits on my poster. However before creating my own I first had to examine existing credits such as the one above and determine what exactly is included in the credits.

When encoding the the credits I came across that it simply includes the job roles of people involved in the film and their names. Here I listed the job roles and other features which they acknowledge in the credits.
-Production
-Name of film
-Actors
-Casting By
-Producers
-Sound by
-Excectutive producers
-Screenplay by
- Directed by
-Director of photography
-Film Editor
-Costume designer

Bottom Section of Credits
- Logos of producers of films (i.e GK films logo above date)
- Logo's of co-producers (BBC films)
- Film Rating
- Movie Website
- Cinema release date

Organisation

When creating a film the main key to a successful piece is organisation.  In order to make sure that our piece ran smoothly today I decided to crop and edit the clips which I though we would use in our piece. By doing this I have saved time as now they will be ready to use when we start putting all our footage together. Also I decided that it would be a good idea if I grouped our footage and sounds into folders such as, location of shot etc.

Another advantage of doing this allowed us to see which shots we had and also whether we needed to shoot anymore.
This is a list of our current shots which I organised into the folder of being useful to our product;

-Establishing shot of house
-Girl running into house
-Spirit girl dancing in the garden
-Spirit girl spinning in the garden
-Shadow in the light
-Stalker Shot through trees
-Zoom on spirit girl
-Mirror shot young girl brushing hair
-Canted angle shot young girl
-Low angle shot of spirit girl as though walking up stairs
-Young girl dragged backwards (eye level)
-Close up of Knives being dragged out holder
-Door opening on its own
-Young girl doing Ouija Board (High Angle shot from behind shoulder)
-Young girl doing Ouija Board (High Angle shot from in front)
-Necklace being dragged along floor on it's own (various angles)
-Young girl on the phone
-Young girl catching a glimpse of the spirit in mirror
-Doll being thrown across kitchen (No evidence of anyone being there)
-Young girl running up stairs
-Young girl being attacked from behind as though the camera is attacker
-Light Whip/Scanning across the camera
-Eye level shot of young girl hid in corner heavy breathing representing fear
-Spirit girl walking past window

Some Edits

Today I started to put the best clips/footage on to our project. This was so that we could easily see which clips we had (which where good to use). I was also separating the sound from the video by using audacity to re-record the sounds. This is so that we can simply edit them later on. Such as make the louder/quieter etc. . There where other things such as laughing, screaming, whispering and moving with sounded odd as they started loudly and slowly deteriorated compared to the noise normally where it would be the opposite to this; start off quiet and then get louder. I really like the effects created using this technique. This also means that we now have our own background noise and ghost like sounds which we can use within our project.

Fonts.

After the initial creation stages of our poster I decided that it would be a good idea to look into fonts which would be suitable. After careful consideration I narrowed it down to the three fonts above, Face your fears, True Lies and 1942 Report

When exploring these I came to the conclusion that the 1942 Report text would be more suitable for our poster. The reason for this is because I believed that the Face your fears text was possibly a little unclear to read for a poster and also looked a little like cartoon writing which didn't look professional enough to me. Also the true lies font had too sharp of an edge and because I wanted to create an eerie atmosphere on my poster this is why I went for 1942 report. Although this text does appear to be a little thin, once I downloaded this font into Photoshop it allowed me to alter the dimensions of each letter and the spaces in between which is why it fits in with our poster. (Shown below)

- Another change that I made to the font was to type it out in capital letters. By doing this it made sure that all of my letters where the same size and ensured they didn't look odd.

Poster 2.

As our first image didn't work we decided it would be better if we chose an image that was portrait instead of landscape. With exploring our shots we came across this image below which we felt would be more suitable to our film.

After fiddling around with the brightness and contrast we decided to insert a background image of trees (which we had taken in some woods near our chosen setting) behind the window pane. By showing these trees on our poster we thought it was a good idea because in horror films there are normally connotations that in the woods and darkness evil and bad things usually happen. therefore my doing these it creates a more eerie and spooky atmosphere on our poster

Other things that we needed to include on our poster -

Tag Line
Title of film
Credits
Rating

After going over these requirements we decided to experiment with different fonts on DaFont.com that we thought would fit in with our horror theme.

Poster attempt 1

For my first poster ideas I had a range of images which I thought deemed acceptable....
Firstly I chose this image as I thought it created the eerie atmosphere which I wanted to show in my poster.

As you can see here there are many elements which relate to my product aim. For example by including the Ouija board it instantly presents to the audience that somewhere in our fm horror will be featured. Also by including one of our main characters (the little girl ghost) it reveals that this could be possibly one of the cast to the audience. By including the doll in my image I feel that it gives a sense of innocence about our character. It represents to the audience that this is only a young child and she could be the innocent one and there is a sense of mystery about it.

In the above image it is a print screen of when I first started to edit our on the computer in the hope that it would be sucsessfull to use for our poster. Firstly I used photoshop to enhance and brighten the hue and saturation on our image. There is a clear difference when we compare the images as we can see that there is a brighter glow shining on our character which makes her more visible to the audience and allows her to stand out more. Also by brightening the image it's brightened the candles flame which also sets a more eerie atmosphere and highlights the Ouija board.

Another decision which we had to make was where abouts we could place our title and tag line etc. When testing out ideas we figured out that with this image there was little room to include certain important elements. In order to try and avoid this situation we tried to crop our image and only include the Ouija board however as you can see below this did not work either. As this caused evident problems we decided to change our image to make it fit.

PHOTOSHOOT

Our Finished Makeup

Makeup research

In order to make our character of the ghost, we researched how to do horror makeup.

Firstly we watched these youtube videos.

We also researched different websites that had how to, step by step instructions on how to create the effects we hoped to achieve.

After we did some research on how to, we then researched what type of makeup we would have to purchase..

Our decided cast

The Ghost Girl

We selected this girl because she fits the characteristics of the other ghost girls we researched, she is age 12 and is quite small, has an innocent face and long hair. We are going to research how to turn her into a ghostly looking girl using clever makeup.

The Victim girl

We decided to use Becky as the actress for the victim girl because we felt she fit the characteristics of the female heroin. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and so fits the stereotypical blonde girl ideology.
She is aged 18 and also fits the innocent damsel in distress idea.

Cast Plan and research

Now our ideas are laid out we went about the casting of our production.

We wanted a young little girl to play the ghost/dead person character so we did some research.

'The Exorcist"

Characteristics:

  •   young girl aged 12
  • messy long straw like hair
  • white skin
  • scars and cuts on the skin
  • menacing eyes
  • bags under the eyes
  • unclean mouth, with cuts and scars
  • dirty broken teeth
  • white innocent like clothing, like night wear
  • blood on clothing
  • smiley expression

' The Ring '
Characteristics
  • young girl
  • old looking face on a young girl
  • scars and cuts
  • white skin
  • dirty skin / skin with mud on
  • dark long wet looking stringy hair
  • manacing evil eyes
  • evil expression
  • bags under eyes
  • innocent white clothing like night clothing

'The Exorcism of Emily rose'
Characteristics
  • older looking teenage girl
  • short messy hair
  • looks more human like
  • angry expression
  • menacing eyes
  • innocent night time looking clothing

We then researched horror films with a young female heroin.

' The House at the end of the street'

characteristics:
  • Teenager aged around 17-19
  • casual everyday clothing
  • innocent looking
  • blonde hair
  • blue eyes

' The pact '
characteristics:
  • Teenager aged around 17-19
  • blonde hair
  • blue eyes
  • black leather clothing
  • looks brave and strong

'The last house on the left'
Characteristics :
  • Teenager aged around 15-18
  • blonde hair
  • blue eyes
  • scared expression
  • looks innocent
  • looks weak (damsel in distress )

After research, we concluded these theories about our characters.

Ghost/Dead girl

Our character is going to be a young girl aged around 12, with long hair and pale skin and we are going to dress her in innocent looking clothing e.g a nightgown type dress. We are also going to use clever makeup techniques to make her face look older with wrinkles with additional cuts and scars.

Victim Girl

We have concluded on the theory of the damsel in distress, and the stereo-typical blonde character; blonde hair blue eyes.
The reason we are going for the stereotypical blonde is because their characteristics are usually innocent, yet dumb we want the character to be "dumb" because we want to portray that she is stupid enough to call for the spirit to be awakened purely out of her own boredom.

Scene Plan

Planning the piece is a very important part to play in our production process. Now we have a very basic storyboard of our ideas, We need to plan our ideas in more detail carefully and thoroughly to ensure our piece looks professional and is well organised. so we needed to come up with our filming  ideas and lay them all out.

Here are ideas for scenes we may consider including in our piece.

  • plot of the Trailer
A young adult becomes bored of reality and becomes very reckless and creates a ouija board ( designed to invite in spirits) she does this out of pure boredom without thinking of the consequences. in result of this a ghost spirit comes to life and turns out to be evil and comes after the young adult and tries to get into the house and also attack her in an attempt to kill her.

  • Establishing shot of the House that is going to get haunted.
This is important because it would set the scene, introduce the house see as our film is to be titled "Silent House". However this can not be any average shot of a house, it needs to be a slow tracking shot at nigh time this is because it would  build up the tension creating an errie atmosphere which would therefore conform to the horror genre and also entice the audience into watching more.

Camera Angles and movements that could establish this effect...
  • Establishing shot
  • Long shot
  • Crane shot
  • High angle shot
  • Canted frame
  • Pan

  • Initial introduction of the Ghost Character.
We thought it would be a good idea to have the ghost character introduced first because this will establish her as the most important more dominant character, suggesting she has the most power above the other character/characters.
We also thought that this character should be hidden in some way, either behind a tree.. or inside the house.. or looking through a window inside the house, to create a haunted atmosphere and also creating the horror that the ghost had managed to get inside without the victim knowing. So we thought the best option was to have the ghost looking through a window unknown to the character living in the house.
We also decided that we should include a crash zoom into the ghosts scary expression to dramatize the scene.
Camera Angles and movements that could establish this effect...
  • Crash zoom
  • Close up
  • Extreme Close up
  • Canted frame
  • long shot
  • Hand-held shot ( thats shaking about )

  • Initial introduction of the victim Character
we decided that we wanted the character to be a female young adult who is bored and is reckless.. so we established this by having the first scene that introduces the girl to be the ouija board scene which displays her reckless actions as she asks for the spirits to come out. we decided an initial establishing shot was vital to show the ouija board so it was very clear to the audience what she was doing. Secondly we thought a close up of the girls face was important so show her expression. We decided she had to have a scared expression which portrayed the moment she regretted her actions in making the ouija board as she heard a loud bang .

Camera Angles and movements that could establish this effect...
  • Close up ( for the character expession )
  • birds-eye view ( for the ouija board )
  • Extreme Close up
  • medium shot
  • eye-level shot
  • Hand-held shot

  • Ghost trying to get in
After the young adult had called the spirit through the ouija board, we thought that we then had to include a scary shot of the ghost trying to get in. This would let the audience know the ouija board worked, and not in a positive way. So we have come up with a few different ideas to gain this effect..
  • ghost suddenly appearing next to the ouija baord
  • ghost in the front garden of the house
  • ghost in the back garden of the house
  • ghost looking through a window
  • ghost walking through a wall
  • ghost trying to smash through a window /door  combined with loud music
Camera Angles and movements that could establish this effect...
  • Crash zoom
  • Close up
  • Extreme Close up
  • Canted angle
  • Crane shot
  • Hand-held shot
Finally we had to plan for the ending to our trailer..
here are our ideas.
  • The Ghost wins and the girl dies
  • The girl survives ( like in Laura Mulveys theory of the final girl )
  • they both die both lose
  • both win, become friends-happy ending
  • cliffhanger
We decided that since this is a teaser trailer, we didn't want it to reveal too much information about the ending, and therefore found that a cliffhanger was suitable for the ending to create suspense and wonder making the audience want to watch the full movie, which is the intention that a teaser trailer adapts.
After research into real media texts, of other horror film trailers, we decided to add the title sequence before the cliff hanger, this is because it would appear to the audience that the trailer has ended, and then if we had the cliffhanger coming after it, it would create an intense dramatic effect shocking the audience which would conform to the aspects of a horror trailer

Cliffhanger Ideas

  • Ghost about to kill the girl then the camera turns off
  • girl about to kill the ghost then the camera goes off
  • girl hides somewhere while ghost walks over
  • girl getting dragged back into a dark place by the ghost with no knowledge if the girl survived.
